Why We Fast
Fasting is not about earning God's attention — it's about clearing the noise so you can hear Him clearly.
"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do… but your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."
— Matthew 6:16–18
Jesus didn't say "if" you fast. He said "when" you fast. Fasting was never presented as optional for the serious follower of Christ — it was assumed. It was a natural part of a life fully surrendered to God.
But here's what fasting is not: it is not a hunger strike to get God's attention. It is not a spiritual performance to prove your devotion. And it is not a formula that forces God's hand. Fasting is an act of intentional hunger — choosing to be more hungry for God than for anything else.
"Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice… to set the oppressed free?"
— Isaiah 58:6
Isaiah 58 gives us a stunning picture of what fasting is meant to accomplish. It's not just personal — it breaks chains. It releases the oppressed. It opens heaven over your life and the lives of those you're interceding for.
What Happens When You Fast
When you fast, something shifts in the spiritual atmosphere. Your spirit becomes more sensitive to the voice of God. Distractions lose their grip. The things of this world grow strangely dim — and the things of heaven come into sharper focus.
- 01Your prayers gain weight.Fasting combined with prayer is one of the most powerful spiritual disciplines available to a believer. History is full of breakthroughs that came through fasting and prayer.
- 02Your flesh loses its grip.Fasting trains your body to submit to your spirit. Every time you say no to physical hunger, you are saying yes to spiritual hunger — and that changes you from the inside out.
- 03You draw near to God.James 4:8 promises that if you draw near to God, He will draw near to you. Fasting is one of the most direct ways to draw near — to say with your whole body, "I want You more than anything."
"You don't fast to earn God's love. You fast because you already have it — and you want more of Him."
